How did the sweet "brigadeiro" come about?

Updated: Nov 15, 2022

Discover the history of the origin of "Brigadeiro", one of the most loved sweets in Brazil

In 1945, right after the end of World War II, Brazil was campaigning for the election of a new president. Candidate Eduardo Gomes, whose military rank was Brigadeiro, was enormously successful among women, as was evidenced by his campaign slogan, “Vote for the brigadeiro who is handsome and single”.

The candy gained prominence and soon began to be sold to raise funds for the campaign. So, their most devoted voters decided to try to promote their campaign by organizing parties to raise funds and to give even more visibility to their candidate.

As it was post-war time, there was a huge lack of fresh milk and sugar, which complicated the task of making any sweets. Therefore, they decided to use condensed milk, mixing it with butter and chocolate. The brigadeiro fell into Brazilian taste and this candy can still be found today at children's birthday parties.

And you, what do you think? Do you like brigadeiro? Or do you prefer some other sweet?
