Meet the Brazilian alternative pop band Jovem Dionísio and their hit "Acorda, Pedrinho"
"Acorda, Pedrinho, que hoje tem campeonato..." nowadays, inside Brazil, who doesn't know this refrain? Escaping from musical styles that reign in the country's hit charts, the Curitiba-based band Jovem Dionísio already had its loyal audience within the alternative circuit with rhythm and songs known as indie pop and bedroom pop.
However, when the song "Acorda, Pedrinho" went viral on a famous social network, the boys from the south of the country saw their fans multiply and also gained national recognition, which, let's face it, within a country of continental dimensions and so culturally diverse as Brazil is not exactly an easy task.
Retro formation and bedroom pop
With five members, the band Jovem Dionísio, which has been in existence since 2018, has a formation that many can consider "retro": vocalist, drummer, bassist, guitarist and keyboardist, which also becomes something unusual since nowadays, most Brazilian artists who are successful in the country, or sing solo or in pairs. In addition, the band uses a lot of the creative resource of bedroom pop in which the artist makes his music indoors, in an intimate way, often in the bedroom, using the available resources that he has at hand without great technologies.
It was through this creative process that the hit "Acorda, Pedrinho" came about because they were isolated in 2020 in a place in the interior of Paraná, who wrote several compositions and among them was the song that would be something like the general public with viral dances and memes with the song in the background.
Will the bands return?
Something to consider as an interesting point, besides the fact that an alternative indie band reached the 1st place on Spotify Brazil, is the question: will we enter the era of bands in the country again?
According to data, Jovem Dionísio is the only band that appears on Spotify's 50th chart, something that has not happened since 2018, since, of the 94 songs that reached the first place in the country (Spotify ranking since January 2017) only 2 were produced by bands, that is, quite a feat these days.
At this moment we cannot say if Jovem Dionísio will open doors or even if he will serve as an inspiration for new talents to appear, but it is a fact that music pleases and entertains people of different ages through the story of Pedrinho, a 50 years old man who has the habit of falling asleep in a bar in Curitiba, and that when he wakes up he simply wants to play pool. Yes, the story is real :)
